Blue Lake Grotto (Gruta do Lago Azul)

Tour Details

The Gruta do Lago Azul is the biggest postcard of Bonito, in Mato Grosso do Sul, and one of the most famous and sought-after tours by visitors from all over Brazil.

The tour of the Blue Lake Grotto is contemplative and goes deep into a cave approximately 300 meters away.

The entire entrance to the cave is lapped by rocks, and to get down, you have to use the steep staircase of more or less 300 steps, equivalent to a height of 150 meters.

During the tour, the tourist will be able to contemplate the geological formations called speleothems, of various shapes and sizes, until arriving at the blue water lake.

In the meantime, the guide makes a few stops so that the tourist can admire the scenery and take beautiful pictures of the place.

The dwell time upon reaching the end of the descent is 10 minutes, enough to marvel at the blue water in Bonito/MS.

It is necessary to respect the minimum age for access to the Cave of the Blue Lake (5 years old) and also the minimum height of 1.30m.

? One of the most amazing Bonito/MS postcards

Gruta do Lago Azul, Gruta da Lagoa Azul or just Gruta Azul of Bonito ? it doesn't matter the name by which the city's postcard became known, but rather its natural beauty.

Whoever visits Bonito cannot resist visiting Blue Lake Grotto, even more so for those who enjoy an adventurous cave tour.

Discovered in 1924, the cave was protected by IPHAN (National Historic and Artistic Heritage Institute) for the preservation of the site and was the first tourist attraction in the 1970s.

Besides being a cave that houses a beautiful blue lake of approximately 90 meters (even better on sunny days, whose rays of sunlight pass through the crevices inside the cave), the site also sheltered ancient species, according to scientific studies.

Among the researches, fossils of already extinct animals - such as mastodon, saber-toothed tiger, and giant sloth - were discovered in the Cave of Lago Azul, as well as troglobites (animals that live in caves), according to the studies of researcher Lívia Cordeiro.

?? Attention, tourist!

Due to the conservation of Bonito's many natural wonders, there are a limited number of places to access the city's tours.

Knowing this, do not waste time: it is essential to prepare the itinerary of your trip as soon as possible.

Curiosities about the Blue Lake Grotto

There are some mysteries and curiosities that surround the Blue Lake Grotto in Bonito, for example:
  • The lake is actually a graveyard of animals, some of them extinct, such as the saber-toothed tiger;
  • The intense blue of the lake is due to the calcium and magnesium reflecting ore particles in the sunlight;
  • The real depth of the Cave of the Blue Lake is a real mystery: at most, the divers reached 87 meters;
  • The minerals in the water have a laxative effect. Therefore, drinking the water from lakes in the region is not recommended.

The time we spend visiting the Gruta do Lago Azul in Bonito is enough to get hungry. The receptive has a structure for restaurants and snack bars, but the visitor has alternatives to eat.

Therefore, the suggestion is to visit the center of Bonito, an area that, although small, has good options for eating and staying.

In addition, there are international delicacies, such as the Italian pasta at Zapi Zen and the Arabic food at the Turquesa restaurant.

Now, if you are thinking of taking food during the tour, it is best to avoid it. Different from the tours to Balneário do Sol, for example, at the Gruta do Lago Azul it is forbidden to carry food on the trip.

In fact, almost all the tourists' belongings must be left at the entrance of the cave.

This avoids food scraps and other materials that could degrade the environment and harm the preservation of the Blue Lake Grotto.

?? How does the tour happen?

Upon arrival at the reception, you receive a helmet for the cave tour.

Beforehand, you must hand in your voucher and pay attention to the tour tickets that organize groups into their respective times.

What they are saying about

Blue Lake Grotto (Gruta do Lago Azul)

Must-see tour in Bonito! The guide Ro who accompanied us told us a lot about the history of the place, answered several questions, pointed out some images that can be observed in the cave formations and even served as a photographer for the group!

The place is simply beautiful! It is worth visiting the cave! Unfortunately the day was cloudy, but we still could see the blue water! Beautiful place, and historical! We were guided by Mr. Julio Cesar, and he was very sweet! He has a lot of information, and was very helpful with the group, taking pictures of each one of us!

Excellent tour option, with experienced guides and good infrastructure to support visitors. Safe ride and easy access even for children and elderly. The attraction is a 20-minute drive from downtown Bonito
