St. Matthew's Grotto (Gruta São Mateus)

Tour Details

The São Mateus Cave is a natural cave located in the municipality of Bonito, Mato Grosso do Sul. In all, the property has 50 hectares, of which 49 hectares are preserved native forest.

Because of its location and structure, regardless of the weather, the temperature in the cave is always pleasant, between 23 °C and 26 °C. Also, as the entrance and exit of the cave are in different places, it is well ventilated.

The tour starts on the third floor of the Kadiwéu Cultural Museum. There the participants receive their protection equipment and some safety information from the tour guide.

The tour starts with a 15-meter long and 5-meter high hanging trail. After that, visitors follow a trail in the middle of the forest, about 320 meters long, to the entrance of the São Mateus Cave, which is 150 meters high.

Despite the simple entrance, the interior of the cave is impressive. During the tour, the visitor will climb about 60 steps and then descend approximately 90 meters below ground.

Inside the cave, tourists will find geological formations that were naturally generated by water over millions of years, such as stalagmites, stalactites, coralloids, and columns of different sizes and colors, reminiscent of the external architecture of medieval Gothic cathedrals.

During the tour, the guide explains some interesting data about the São Mateus Cave and points out the main geological formations, besides taking care of the safety of everyone in the group. You are also allowed to stop and take pictures!

Because it is a dry cave, the São Mateus Cave is home to some animals. Therefore, it is not rare to see bats and other animals. In addition, it is also possible to see toucans, monkeys, and macaws during the out-and-back trail.

When the trail inside the cave ends, visitors make their way back to the Kadiwéu Cultural Museum by the same trail they arrived on.

This is one of the best tours in Bonito, and if you want to guarantee this experience, you need to buy your ticket as soon as possible, because places are limited.

What they are saying about

St. Matthew's Grotto (Gruta São Mateus)

I loved this tour, the reception was great and welcoming, the guide was super helpful and clear in his explanations (it was obvious that he is well prepared and has studied the subject), proactive in offering to take some pictures... In short, a very interesting tour at a fair price!

Very nice tour, very cool to see the formation inside the cave. The guide is excellent! There is a trail to get to the cave, it gets a little tired! It's worth taking water and wear light clothes and tennis shoes.

Incredible. The whole experience, the museum we visited with items from various eras, the walk to the cave, the care and kindness of the guide, inside, the view is simply indescribable, the closeness with nature... Formations that took thousands of years to form... Wonderful
